Elevate Self-Care With Affirmations

Updated: 6 days ago

Hey there, friends! Today, I want to dive deep into a topic that's been an absolute game-changer for me on my personal journey to self-care: affirmations. Ever since I've learnt about affirmations, I've used them to increase my self-esteem and to help me achieve my finance and fitness goals. Let's chat about what they are, why they're awesome, and how you can create your own personalized affirmations to nurture your mind, body, and soul.

So, what are affirmations? Well, think of them as positive statements or phrases that you repeat to yourself regularly. These empowering statements are like little love notes to yourself, designed to shift your mindset from negativity and self-sabotaging thoughts and habits to confidence and self-love. When you repeat affirmations consistently, you're essentially rewiring your brain. Instead of defaulting to negative self-talk, you start to cultivate a more positive and empowering inner dialogue, which in turn shapes future behaviour. But the benefits don't stop there. Research shows that affirmations can also help reduce stress, boost self-esteem, increase resilience, and enhance overall well-being. It's like giving yourself a big ol' bear hug from the inside that produces success in your life on the outside.

How I Write My Affirmations

Self-authored affirmations are the most ideal ones to repeat as they are tailored to address your individual, specific needs; but how the heck do you create affirmations? Well, here's the beauty of it: there are no hard and fast rules! Affirmations should resonate with YOU on a deep level, so it's all about crafting statements that feel authentic and uplifting. My affirmations are tailored to suit a specific area of my life, e.g. success at a new venture, before a public speaking event, improvement in a specific relationship, etc.; whatever is the area of challenge that I'm facing at present, I will deeply reflect on my thought pattern and feelings concerning that area. I identify negative thoughts and self-sabotaging behaviour in that area then write affirmations that reflect the opposite of those thoughts or behaviour. My affirmations are carefully written to ensure they are achievable and most importantly BELIEVABLE. After all, if you don't believe in your own statement you will not achieve success.

Here's a simple three-step process you can use to create your very own self-authored affirmations:

  1. Identify Your Needs: Take some time to reflect on areas of your life where you could use a little extra love and encouragement. Whether it's boosting your confidence, practising self-compassion, or cultivating gratitude, pinpoint what you want to focus on.

  2. Craft Your Affirmations: Once you've identified your needs, start crafting affirmations that address those areas. Keep your statements positive, present tense, and personal. Instead of saying, "I will be confident," try "I am confident and capable in all that I do."

  3. Repeat, Repeat, Repeat: The key to making affirmations work their magic is repetition. Incorporate your affirmations into your daily routine by saying them out loud, writing them down, or even creating affirmation cards to carry with you throughout the day.

Here are examples of self-care affirmations to help you self-author your own.

Using Self-Care Affirmations in Your Daily Routine

  1. Morning Ritual: Begin your day by reciting one or more of these affirmations. This sets a positive tone for the day ahead. The best time to do this is when you've broken your sleep but before you're fully awake. It's a good idea therefore to memorize what you want to repeat. As you do so, close your eyes and visualize your success in that particular area.

  2. Visual Reminders: Write your favourite affirmation on a sticky note and place it where you'll see it often – on your mirror, computer, or fridge.

  3. Affirmation Journal: Create a dedicated journal to jot down your affirmations daily. Reflect on how they make you feel and any changes in your mindset.

  4. Meditation and Mindfulness: Integrate affirmations into your meditation or mindfulness practice. Breathe deeply, repeating the affirmation to yourself with each inhale and exhale.

  5. Affirmation Cards: Create a deck of self-care affirmation cards. Shuffle and draw one each day to focus on.

  6. Bedtime Routine: End your day with an affirmation that promotes self-love and relaxation. These should be the final thoughts before falling asleep setting the stage for restful sleep and for mindful reprogramming.

Final Thoughts Self-care is a lifelong journey, and affirmations can be your faithful companions along the way. When recited regularly with firm conviction, these simple yet powerful statements have the potential to transform your relationship with yourself and create a positive, nurturing mindset. Incorporate affirmations into your daily routine, and experience the transformation as they guide you towards a life filled with self-compassion, well-being, love and success. You are worth the care and kindness you provide yourself.
